The 2024 National Convention was a celebration of scholarship, leadership, and fellowship, bringing together Members from across the country to Arlington, VA. Here’s a look back at the highlights from this unforgettable event!

Day One: Thursday, July 25

Welcome Bags

The convention kicked off on Thursday with registration where Members picked up their NC24 swag, including a gift bag generously donated by the Capital Alumni Chapter and a baseball cap sponsored by the one by one® grant from 4Imprint. The morning began with office hours led by Leadership Development Coordinators Natasha Carmichael, Victoria Mahle, and Lindsay Slater. This was a unique opportunity for attendees to engage directly with their contacts at the National Office and discuss various aspects of their Chapters and personal development.

Members attended the Gift of Life: Teaming up to Save Lives session to learn more about the life-saving potential of a simple swab test and how they could bring this initiative to their campuses. Since the start of Phi Sigma Pi’s partnership with Gift of Life, we have sponsored 2,423 total swabs, resulting in 38 matches and three transplants.

Members in front of the Martin Luther King Jr. Monument

The afternoon featured the Grand Chapter meeting, where important discussions and decision-making took place. Once business concluded, the evening brought NC24 Kick-Off where Members engaged in service projects like bracelet making, played video and card games to support Extra Life, and got creative with painting.

To cap off the day, attendees could choose to explore Washington, D.C., with a guided tour of iconic monuments, memorials and other landmarks. This excursion offered picture-perfect moments and made for an unforgettable night in the nation’s capital.

Day Two: Friday, July 26

Members at Bowlero

The momentum continued on Friday with another round of Grand Chapter sessions, focusing on key organizational decisions and initiatives.

Members spent the evening at Bowlero, a retro-inspired bowling and arcade space. Attendees enjoyed bowling and arcade games, fostering an environment for building connections and having fun.

Day Three: Saturday, July 27

The final day began with the annual Foundation Membership Meeting for Foundation members to learn more about the past and upcoming years for the Phi Sigma Pi Foundation. As the current Sports Editor for her University’s newspaper, Mia Messina (Saint Joseph’s University ‘22) knows a thing or two about navigating the world of sports journalism as a woman. In February, she was recognized with a first-place Keystone Media Award for her story “Evening the Score: College Women Making Strides in Sports Journalism.”

Messina’s article began as a class assignment. She and her peers were tasked to write a trend piece and chose to write on a matter close to her heart. Messina turned to the topic of women in sports journalism.

Mia Messina (Saint Joseph’s University ’22)

Throughout her writing process, Messina spoke with former female sports editors of The Hawk, the student-run newspaper at Saint Joseph’s University. Many have pursued sports journalism as their career, and many shared an experience familiar to Messina – that of being the only woman in the room in a male-dominated field.

“I have had experiences where I am the only woman in the room, and I wanted to bring light to other women’s similar experiences,” Messina shares. “I believe college women are beginning to break through and that deserves to be celebrated and written about.”

The story sheds light on the challenges women in sports journalism oftentimes experience but also highlights the power of the women who are pursuing their passion despite the obstacles along the way.

“A lot of women question their skill set or if they’re deserving of the opportunities they have been given. I fall victim to it myself, but in order to continue to grow and move forward we need to overcome this mindset,” Messina says. “I was always super proud of this story because of how much work I put into it and how much it meant to me; however, for that work to be recognized by others was such an amazing feeling.”

Outside of the newsroom, Messina is a dedicated Member of the Zeta Iota Chapter of Phi Sigma Pi. She has held the position of Historian since her Sophomore year and credits her experience as a leader in the Chapter for her growth throughout college.

“As an Initiate, I grew much closer to my class, and so many of my friendships now result from that,” Messina says. “My experience as a Member has allowed me to be a more well-rounded person, growing in all three areas of the Tripod: scholarship, fellowship, and leadership. My experience has been invlauable and has helped shape me into who I am today.”

Check out Messina’s award-winning piece, “Evening the Score: College Women Making Strides in Sports Journalism” here.

Keep reading to explore how you can find your starting point and get involved in volunteering with Phi Sigma Pi’s service partners and beyond.

1. Reflect on Your Passions and Skills

Take some time to reflect on what causes resonate with you and how your skills can contribute to positive change. Do you want to help those in your local community in need? Maybe you’re interested in working with animals, passionate about protecting the environment, or want to volunteer in a healthcare setting. No matter where your interests lie, there’s a way to use your passion for good.

2. Explore Phi Sigma Pi’s Service Partners

Phi Sigma Pi has established partnerships with various nonprofit organizations and community service agencies across the country. These service partners offer a wide range of volunteering opportunities in areas such as education, healthcare, and social justice. Take a look at some of Phi Sigma Pi’s key service partners!

– Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY): HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation. Contact Zakkiyya Taylor at taylorz@hoby.org to get involved.

– Gift of Life Marrow Registry: Help recruit new blood stem cell and bone marrow donors to save the lives of blood cancer patients. Contact Traci Ackerman at tackerman@giftoflife.org to host a drive or for questions.

– Extra Life: Participate in gaming events to bring awareness and raise funds for your local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. Contact Abbey Conrad at aconrad@cmnhospitals.org to get involved.

– Learn to Be: Support students from under-resourced communities by becoming a virtual tutor through Learn to Be. Contact Emily Darcy at emily.darcy@learntobe.org to get involved.

4. Start with Local Initiatives

Consider starting small with local initiatives and community events. Attend a neighborhood clean-up, volunteer at a local soup kitchen, or participate in a fundraising walk or run. These smaller-scale opportunities provide a great way to get involved and make a positive impact in your community. Check out your university’s website as a starting point to find events you can easily sign up for!

6. Volunteer Virtually

In today’s digital age, there are plenty of virtual volunteering opportunities available for those who prefer to contribute remotely. Whether it’s participating in virtual fundraising events, offering online tutoring sessions, or assisting with social media campaigns, there are many ways to make a difference from the comfort of your own home.

Once you’ve identified volunteering opportunities that resonate with you, whether through Phi Sigma Pi’s service partners or other organizations, it’s time to take the leap and get involved! Remember, every act of service, no matter how small, contributes to positive change and makes a difference in the lives of others.

As the temperatures rise and summer break approaches, it’s easy for the momentum of your chapter to dwindle. But, with a little proactive effort, you can maintain engagement among your members throughout the summer months. Follow along to read some tips to ensure your chapter remains vibrant and connected during the break.

1.  Keep up with the Chapter’s Social Media

Social media is a powerful tool for staying connected and keeping your members engaged, even when they’re scattered across different locations. Regularly update your chapter’s social media platforms with relevant content, like throwback photos and what your Members are doing over the summer! Plus, keeping your social media active is highly beneficial when it comes time for recruitment.

2. Check in with Fellow Leaders

Effective communication among chapter leaders is crucial for maintaining a strong team. Don’t forget to check in with your fellow leaders to discuss ideas, address any concerns, and ensure everyone is on the same page. Collaborate on strategies to keep the chapter active and engaged over the summer.

3. Connect with Chapter Members and Keep Communication Open

Reach out to individual chapter members to see how they’re doing and let them know you’re excited to see them in the fall! Personalized messages can go a long way in making members feel appreciated and connected. Make use of group chats and other forums where you can keep the chapter connected from a distance. If Members are sticking around your campus for the summer, meet up to hang out or volunteer together!

4. Plan for a Successful Fall Term

Use the summer months as an opportunity to lay the groundwork for a successful fall term. Brainstorm ideas for events and initiatives that will excite your members and attract potential new members. Set goals and create plans of action so that you can hit the ground running when you get back on campus!

Summer may be a time for relaxation and vacation, but it doesn’t mean your chapter’s momentum has to come to a halt. By staying active on social media, communicating regularly with fellow leaders and Members, and planning ahead for the fall term, you can keep your chapter engaged and thriving throughout the summer months. Remember, a little effort now can lead to a stronger, more cohesive chapter in the future!

As a growing number of Americans continue to live in poverty, one Phi Sigma Pi Member is making a difference in the lives of those in need. Walls of Love, founded by Holly Jackson (Cleveland State University ‘10) has become a symbol of hope and solidarity for countless individuals across the nation.

Wall of love with supplies on fence.

In 2018, Jackson embarked on a mission to make a difference in the lives of her community by placing essential items, like toiletries and winter gear, on walls in areas of poverty. What started as a labor of love quickly gained attention when the news of her initiative went viral and allowed Walls of Love to become a nationwide effort.

The story behind Walls of Love is deeply personal for Jackson, who was once unhoused while pregnant after leaving a situation of domestic violence. Despite facing immense challenges, Holly persevered, eventually finding her way to a safer and better life. It was this journey that fueled her desire to help others facing similar struggles.

“I have lived this life. I was seven months pregnant with my oldest daughter and homeless because I left the situation,” Holly says. “People can be very judgmental because they don’t know your situation.”

Walls of Love operates solely on donations and the support of volunteers, with 100% of proceeds going directly to impact individuals in need. Holly’s unwavering commitment to helping others and her tireless efforts have made a profound impact, with Walls of Love having assisted over one million people through 3,086 Walls of Love in 30 different states since its founding.

Later this year, Jackson is celebrating a milestone and looking to how Walls of Love can make its greatest impact yet.

“November 2, 2024 is going to be our sixth anniversary. We are looking to do 100 Walls of Love the same day across the whole US,” Holly shared.

For those inspired to get involved, there are various ways to support Walls of Love. Volunteers can sign up on the organization’s website, suggest locations for new walls, or donate directly through multiple platforms. Additionally, businesses have the opportunity to sponsor walls or contribute items for donation.

Jackson says she is grateful for the support received and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those in need.

Walls of Love stands as a testament to the power of love, compassion, and community. Through acts of kindness and generosity, Holly Jackson and the Walls of Love continue to spread hope and inspire change, one wall at a time.

Effective communication is vital to the success of any organization, and Phi Sigma Pi chapters are no exception. In a chapter filled with various activities and events, effective communication acts as a thread that binds members together, ensuring that everyone is informed and engaged. Keep reading to learn more about how good communication practices can elevate your chapter’s culture and performance.

1. Continuous Engagement
Between class, chapter activities, and other commitments, it can be easy for members to lose track of upcoming events. This is where continuous engagement comes in as a crucial strategy. By utilizing channels like group messages, emails, and reminder notifications, chapters can keep Members accountable. Regular reminders about organizational functions not only help boost participation but also instill a sense of responsibility among Members toward their roles and commitments.

2. Utilizing Multimedia Platforms
Leveraging multimedia platforms such as PowerPoint presentations and Google Calendars can significantly enhance the effectiveness of communication. Incorporating visual aids during meetings not only makes information more digestible but also ensures that it resonates with members on a deeper level. Additionally, posting important updates on Google Calendars and sharing PowerPoint presentations serve as valuable reference points for members to stay updated.

3. Harnessing the Power of Email Updates
Immediately following each chapter meeting, sending out a comprehensive email listing all upcoming events, along with detailed descriptions, timings, and locations, is highly valuable. This not only ensures clarity but also allows members to plan and prepare accordingly.

4. Timeliness is Key
When it comes to communication, timing is everything. An email or message sent out ahead of scheduled events ensures that members have ample time to mark their calendars and make necessary arrangements. Whether it’s a social gathering, fundraising event, or service project, timely communication reinforces the importance of active involvement.

Effective communication propels success and fosters a cohesive community in Phi Sigma Pi chapters. As you strive towards excellence, keep communication at the forefront.

As leaders entrusted to guide our chapters toward success, it is important to understand the significance of effective leadership and delegation. Delegating effectively not only ensures the fulfillment of your role but also empowers the entire chapter, fostering a collaborative and dynamic environment.

So, what exactly is delegation? It’s a collaborative approach that allows us, as leaders, to focus on our unique responsibilities while providing opportunities for others to contribute. In this blog, you’ll learn how to consider the individual strengths of your fellow leaders and the entire Chapter to best delegate tasks to the people who will enjoy them.

Identify Priorities

Determining the priority of tasks or projects is the first step in successful delegation. Recognize which items are most important, meaningful, or time-sensitive. This clarity allows you to allocate responsibilities effectively and focus on tasks that demand your attention.

Members with PSP Letters
Members of the Omicron Chapter at Shippensburg University.

Capitalize on Individual Strengths

Understanding the strengths of each team member is crucial for effective delegation. Select tasks that align with individual skills and interests, and when necessary, provide guidance and training. This ensures that each member is set up for success in their assigned tasks.

Clear Communication

When delegating, it is essential to communicate your expectations. Share preferences, ideas about the final product, and deadlines to avoid misunderstandings. Effective communication sets the foundation for a smooth and successful collaboration.

Trust and Empower

Once a task is delegated, trust the person to complete it and empower them to leverage their expertise. Feel free to periodically check in on their progress, but avoid micromanaging.

Provide Feedback

Upon task completion, take the time to offer constructive feedback. Recognize and acknowledge a job well done publicly, fostering a positive and supportive chapter environment. Remember to always offer constructive criticism privately.

By delegating effectively,  we not only enhance the efficiency of our chapters but also create an inclusive and empowering environment where every member plays a vital role. Delegation is not a sign of weakness, but a strategic move to build a stronger, more productive, and unified chapter.

Adira Abdullah (UNC Charlotte ‘22) is as well-rounded and hard-working as students come. A dedicated scholar pursuing double majors, leader in multiple student organizations, and an involved community member, Abdullah recently added another accolade to her list of achievements. She now presides over the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) as Second Vice President.

Adira Abdullah headshot

Abdullah, a Member of both Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., and Phi Sigma Pi, has been preparing for this moment. Now serving on a national scale, Abdullah’s efforts are going far beyond her local and regional involvement. In her role as Second Vice President on the National Executive Board of Directors for the NPHC, her leadership now extends to over 1.5 million lifetime members of fraternities and sororities worldwide.

The NPHC, founded in 1930 at Howard University, governs nine historically African American Greek organizations known as the “Divine Nine.” The fraternities and sororities were founded out of a need for access to Greek Life for students who were being denied the rights and privileges awarded to white students. Abdullah’s introduction to the Divine Nine came before she stepped foot on her college campus: her mother is a Member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., and her father is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

“It is truly an honor and blessing to hold such a significant national role,” Abdullah says. “Whether it involves implementing innovative programs, fostering a sense of unity among members, or leading initiatives that align with NPHC’s values, I am eager to contribute to the overall success and well-being of sisterhood and brotherhood.”

As an undergraduate, Abdullah brings a fresh perspective to her position, focusing on implementing innovative ideas and fostering collaboration at the undergraduate level. Her dedication to community service and making a positive impact resonates with the values of all NPHC organizations.

Abdullah currently also serves as the Northeastern Region Youth Services Coordinator for Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. In this role, she is responsible for overseeing regional youth programs and assisting undergraduate members by providing workshops, conferences, and trainings to ensure their success on their campuses. Abdullah’s national position qualifies her as the highest-ranked undergraduate member across all NPHC organizations.

Within Phi Sigma Pi, Abdullah has served on the Eta Xi Chapter’s diversity committee and played a vital role in reviewing and revising the Chapter’s bylaws. In addition to the leadership experience she’s gained, she has met several of her closest friends through the organization, whom she describes as her “biggest motivators.”

“My experience with Phi Sigma Pi has been nothing short of exceptional. Within the fraternity, I have made meaningful connections and established lasting friendships,” Abdullah said. “Phi Sigma Pi has provided me with a platform to engage with a diverse group of incredibly intelligent individuals who share a commitment to academic excellence.”

As an engaged student and member of her campus community, Abdullah has become a pro at effectively managing her time and alleviating stress while remaining committed to multiple organizations.
